Tweet, Tweet, Ads?
I don’t know if some of you have noticed recently, but Twitter has started implementing “promoted tweets” for various big name brands. They started to put them out this summer at the very top of the trending topics lists on your newsfeeds. Then they started to slip some promoted tweets in from the brands that you are following. Well low and behold, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo has released information that Twitter will soon be putting promoted tweets from brands that you don’t follow, into your timelines. That’s right, Twitter will soon be filling your timelines with promoted tweets from top paying companies.
We knew this was inevitable, since Twitter’s main source of revenue comes from advertisements. Although it is sad to see our once ad-free newsfeeds leave, it will be interesting to see how well this new model works. According to Mr. Costolo, the advertisements you will see will be based upon things you are already interested in. Using interest graphs based on the accounts that you already follow, Twitter will integrate promoted ads from companies they feel best match your interests.
Before we can criticize, we’ll have to see how well it works. With all the new growth that Twitter has seen in recent months, it would be a shame to see it get ruined by the implementation of these ads. Hopefully, Costolo keeps a close eye on it to make sure growth isn’t slowed, but if it is, I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if he pulls this model and tries something new. What are your thoughts on this matter? Would love to hear some feedback.
