5 Reasons Why Your SEO Campaign Did Not Work

SEO has often gotten a bad rap for being a practice that seems shady, spammy, and full of lies. SEO has gotten this reputation because there are too many self-proclaimed SEO experts out there flooding the web with tips and tricks that aren’t true at all. Then there are the people who are all about doing things themselves these days just to save a few bucks. They will read a blog post or two, try it out for themselves and then sit back and wonder why they didn’t get the results they were expecting.

In order to have a good SEO campaign there are certain things you need to consider for it to be successful. First off you need to be strategic in your methods and have a well thought out campaign that is executed to a T. Here are five of the most common mistakes that DIY SEO “experts” make all the time.

1.    Buy Cheap You Buy Twice

SEO is not cheap by any means, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be expensive either. Before starting out on your SEO campaign you must do the research to find out which keywords apply to your niche. This keyword research isn’t a do it once and call it day. In order to be successful at SEO you must invest at least 10 to 12 hours a week in research over the course of a year, or work with an SEO agency, which will cost upwards of around $4,000 a month. The key to remember when it comes to SEO is that it’s an ongoing investment and you will only get out what you put in.

2.    Patience, Patience, Patience

What most people don’t realize is that SEO isn’t a quick fix. It requires countless hours and an ongoing effort to push your site to the top of the rankings. By thinking that investing a lot of money in SEO one time will do the trick is just wrong.  Statistics have shown that it takes roughly around 12 months before you start to see your money back on your investment. The key here is to be patient and look at SEO as a long-term investment for your business.

3.    You Didn’t Optimize your Site for SEO

Your website is the foundation of your SEO campaign. You wouldn’t build a house on a broken foundation would you? Same applies for your website. In order to have a strong SEO campaign, your site has to be flawless. What I mean by this, is that all your top pages must have Page Titles, Meta descriptions, and lots of strong keywords in the copy that is targeted to your SEO goals. Make sure before starting an SEO campaign that your onsite SEO is up to par otherwise it wont matter how much time, money, or content you have. You might make it on a search engine page result but you definitely won’t make it to the top, which is where you need to be in this day and age.

4.    You Didn’t Do the Research

You optimized your site for the wrong keywords, what else is new? The most common mistake that businesses make is not putting in the research hours and optimizing their website for the wrong keywords. Take the time and use the Google Adwords Keyword Tool to get the appropriate data for the keywords you want to be targeting. This is a great tool that gives you the actual number of searches each keyword or phrase gets, that you are looking for.

Another common mistake made by most is that they target high volume keywords the convert poorly. What’s the point in spending all the time and money into SEO if it’s just going to convert badly? The trick is to check your organic traffic in Google Analytics and identify keyword combinations that have high conversions. It’s better to have higher converting keywords, then keywords with just high search volumes.

5.    You Tried Keywords out of your League

If you target the most competitive terms right off the bat, your setting yourself up for failure. It will take too much money and time before you see any kind of results and with so many others attempting to go after the same keywords you may never see any results. What you need to do is find out which keywords you rank on and see what page you rank on for those keywords. From there you can determine whether or not to pursue those keywords or not. For instance you wouldn’t want to pursue a keyword where you show up on page 25 of the results, but if you show up on page 5 then it would be worth your while to do some more research and try to rank higher on those keywords.

To think that SEO is easy is foolish. It takes a lot of time, research, effort, and money for your SEO campaign to be successful.
