Getting Started with a Google + Brand Page

The long awaited arrival of Google+’s Brand pages is finally over. On Tuesday November 8th, 2011 Google finally gave the official word that Google + was open for businesses. Now Businesses and Brands can have their own profiles on Google Plus. Not only is this huge news for the Social Media world, but also gives marketers a new avenue to explore, with some new options and features for branding and promotion. With Google being the number one search engine in the world, it will be interesting to see how Google + Brand pages will help businesses with SEO. For now, let me show you how to set one up for either your business or personal brand.

To set up a Google Plus Page, first sign into your Google Plus account and then make your way over to http://www.google.com/+/business/. There’s a nice little video there that Google took the time to make, but its just not necessary to watch unless you have no clue what Google + is by now.

Step one is to choose a category that best suits the business or brand that you are making a page for. The options are Local Business or Place, Product or Brand, company, Institution or Organization, Arts, Entertainment or Sports, and Other. Choose one that best represents who you are and it will bring you to the next page.

Next, you enter in your Business or Brand Name followed by your website url. Then you will be asked to select a subcategory, which is dependent on the main category you chose. For instance, if you choose sports it will give you all kinds of options based on sports such as Professional athlete, Professional Sports Team, etc… Then you must choose who will have access to see your page. For instance if it is for an alcohol brand, chances are you would choose the alcohol related 21+ option, or if you want everyone to see it you can choose any Google + user.

The next step is to upload a photo and select a tag line. Google allows you to use up to 10 words to summarize your brand or business. My suggestion for this is to pack in as many keywords related to your brand or business as possible. Remember Google is the largest search engine in the world; chances are these pages will show up in search results so make sure your tag lines are SEO friendly and keyword dense!

Finally, Your page is complete! Google being as kind and caring as they are, offer you the option to “Get the word out” about your newly created Google plus page. You can share your new page with all your circles and with the public with the click of a button. Once you’ve sent it out you are taken to a congratulations page! On this page, Google has provided multiple tools to connect your page with your website. They offer a Google Plus badge and a Plus 1 button that can be added to your website that links directly to your new Google brand page. (For an example, Check out the Balanced Life Fitness at https://plus.google.com/u/0/b/106760991253474433780/106760991253474433780/posts)

It’s that simple! Now its up to you to start spreading the word because Brand pages have to be added to a Google Plus user’s circle first before you can add them to your Brand’s circles. For right now you cant transfer a page to a new user or have more then one manager per page. This is something Google is looking into. Also no “Vanity” URLs for now so don’t worry about that until Google makes this available.
