5 Do’s And Don’ts For SEO In 2012

by + on April 11, 2012

Search engine optimization should not just be a task, but an ambition. Everyone want’s their website to get on top of the search engine results page or SERP, but in 2012 you really need to put in the work to see these kind of results. In this blog post I’m going to cover some of the right things to do for your SEO initiatives, and some of the wrongs things that you mustn’t do! Let’s jump right into it and discuss the top points below.

Tip 1: Don’t Make Your SEO Campaign Isolated

There once was a time when SEO was independent and worked on its own to impress just the search engines. But now, things are different. The virtual space is connected to various platforms and hence, our initiatives on all these platforms have to be well planned and executed. So try connecting your social media campaigns with your search engine optimization plans; they might just help in getting more people on board.

Tip 2: Target The Most Relevant Keywords

Over time, we generally tend to become more and more confident about our activities and tend to start experimenting with lesser popular keywords. Now, you may rank #1 for an irrelevant keyword, but this is pointless because it doesn’t really bring you the right traffic that you are looking for. In most cases it will just increase your numbers but in the long run it wont increase your bottom line. Therefore, targeting relevant keywords is extremely important in growing your business online.

Tip 3: Keep Awesome Titles

This doesn’t mean your site or posts should have nothing but jargons. It simple means you should have nice, catchy titles, that both invoke curiosity as well as be benefit driven for  your readers. You want to let them know that their is some sort of benefit in reading your content. Preferably, your titles should include keywords in them so that your readers as well as search engine spiders can be aware of the content they are about to read on the page.

Tip 4: Don’t Focus Only on Google

Yes Google is the most popular search engine of our time. But that’s the greatest power of virtual media – you never know who the competitor is or what the next brainwave could be. Looking forward, it’s possible that Twitter, Facebook and Youtube could become the next platforms for searching! ( YouTube is already the 2nd largest Search Engine in the World)  It’s all about how you strategize and create a personality that helps the client bond with you. Meanwhile, don’t ignore search engines like Bing and Yahoo! They are quickly gaining popularity.

Tip 5: Don’t Hesitate To Link To Good Content

Yes, content still rules and it will continue to rule. So don’t hesitate to link to great content and  other websites. Even if there isn’t any direct benefit for you, it is certainly good for your reputation since you are providing your users with good quality content.

At the end of the day, there are various ways in which you can improve the Search Engine ranking of your website, but what you need to remember is that you mustn’t’ be bending the rules. SEO has to be white hat and white hat only, not Black hat, because in the long run you want support for your site and not just numbers or a presence on the SERP.

People have to be satisfied with what you have to offer. If you miss out there then you miss out for your business and that’s not something you wish to do!

Nice graphic, good advice. Fully agree SEO has moved on from a prescriptive list of ‘follow these 5 techniques’ to a more vague ‘create quality’ space.

This requires a more holistic approach, and whilst some prescriptive techniques still need abided by, the general mantra ‘do things well’ is now the driving force behind hitting the top of your game. Thanks for sharing,

I’ve found great success by taking the time to choose the right keywords. I thought that I couldn’t possibly find the time; now it’s part of my writing process.

    Great tips!

SEO is an ever changing game and it can be really hard to keep up. I want to optimize my efforts, but I don’t want to overdo it. I also don’t want to waste my time putting my efforts in the wrong places.

Thanks so much for the great tips!

The best is to provide quality content and non plagiarized content. Common, but important things to keep in mind are grammar, language and spelling mistakes.

We have taken our new site from 21 million alexa to 620k in just 12 weeks following pretty much all that you have mentioned. It is very reassuring to know we have been making progress down the right road! Thanks for sharing this affirmation!

It is always hard to try and get to grips with seo and the rules to follow. Especially as the rules and algorithms the search engines use to rank your site always change.

I guess the bottom line is just to keep track of how your site is doing and do all you can to make small changes and remember, increased ranking doesn’t happen over night.

I have tried to create a small diagram to follow which may help: http://www.juicemydesign.com/blog/homepage-seo-dos-and-donts-for-success/
